Nasce Mikao Usui, em Taniai Mura, no distrito de Yamagata, na província de Gifu, no Japão.
Mikao Usui abre uma clínica em Tóquio, onde começa a ensinar e praticar o sistema de cura energética que viria a ser conhecido como Reiki. Ele também funda a Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai, a primeira organização formal de Reiki.

Mikao Usui falece após ter ensinado Reiki para mais de 2.000 pessoas.
Hawayo Takata, uma mulher nipo-americana, aprende Reiki com Chujiro Hayashi, um dos discípulos de Usui, no Japão. Ela é creditada por ter introduzido o Reiki nos Estados Unidos, especialmente no Havaí.
